Fonki Cheff Q&A

We first became aware of Fonki Cheff through the The Forty Five Kings and his brilliant all 45s mixes. He has just released a brand new mix taking us on a journey through Rumba. 25ThC wanted to know more so asked him a few questions.

How and when did you first get into DJ’ing?

I started to DJ in like 97 or so using my friends equipment , because I didn’t have any money at that time.

You clearly love your 45s. What is it about the format that most appeals to you?

Starting playing 45s was natural to me, I had been in the USA for 7 years and it was easier to bring 45s than it was to carry those heavy 12″ and I also had back problems. I step in to records on Broadway (Sacramento) one of the biggest and craziest 45s shop I’ve ever been.

Where do you go to dig for records?

I dig mostly in flea markets and record shops. I try not to buy much on discogs. Sometimes when I sell some expensive records I also order from Juno (Tons of hip hop 45s lately).

I’m absolutely loving your latest mix. Tell us about Rumba and the artists we need to know about?

Rumba is a heavily influenced style depending on the year. Mid to late 70s got some funk on it, late 70s to early 80s is mostly the disco time. Also compilations like Belter acid rumba & Txarly Brown’s Achilifunk helped to rescue forgotten track’s. I’m super happy skilled DJs from others countries listen to a little rumba, because  it is a genre considered small in comparison with the big Flamenco names and we are just a few people trying to get people to know about it!

Which DJs inspire you?

Back in the days the west coast DJs like Shadow, Chemist and Numark were a heavy influence, but the dj that most influenced me is DJ Koco aka Shimokita. I even changed the way I use headphones watching his videos. To me no doubt the best DJ in the planet now and hoping he comes to Spain!

We are also big big fans of DJ Koco and are looking forward to the day we can see him perform live. You can check out more of Fonki Cheff’s mixes on his Mixcloud page.

Blade, Seek the Northerner & DJ Woody – Fuck the Fans 7″

We have followed Blade since 2000 when he released his amazing album “The Unknown” with, the sadly now deceased, Mark B (RIP). Regarded as one of the UK’s best Hip Hop MC’s we are pleased to see him come of retirement with a brand new 7″ vinyl release.

After a lengthy hiatus Seek the Northerner sent him a beat that he felt he could do something different on. The track is a message of gratitude to his fans in his recognisable and iconic style. Seek the NOrthenr also jumps on a verse and World Champion turntablist DJ Woody brings the cuts.

Boca 45- 2020 Donuts #1

2020 keeps on giving at the moment as far as 45’s are concerned. Hot off the back of Bocas Club Donuts collection, and 2019’s album “Forty Five”, Boca 45 has a new collection of coloured 45s out this year

His aim is to create a whole album from the 2 tracks contained on each 45 released every other month. Each of the releases are limted to 300 numbered copies each.

First up is a collaboration with Hannah Williams on side A called ‘Powerful’. Those in the know will be aware that Hannah was recently sampled by non other than Jay-Z on his track ‘4:44’. Set over a dark heavy beat, the lyrics came about as a result of the current difficult political times that the UK finds itself in. Those who picked up the recent Bocas Forty Five CD will know it very well as it closes that mix.

On the flip is ‘Sparky Evans’ – heavy drums, great samples, and a load of scratching. What more could you want?

Grab your copy now before it sells out which won’t be long!

Choi feat. Guilty Simpson – Hip Hop Saved My Life 7″

Choi records out of Melbourne have started 2020 with a bang with their debut Hip Hop 45 release. Produced by Choi of the superb group The Traffic and featuring the legendary Guilty Simpson.
Side A is the original mix of the track. A chugging old school beat interspersed with a lovely horn sample, scratches and a switched up chorus. Guilty Simpson’s flow is perfectly placed over the top and he never fails to impress with his rhymes.
Side B features the Space Remix which is slower paced (90 bpm). Heavy bass, crunchy drums and synth lines keep you head nodding throughout.
We can’t wait to see what else the label has up its sleeves this year.

Type 303 – Sticky Disko 7″

To celebrate their 10th release, 45 Live Records have taken a surprise turn in releasing a hip house/acid house 45.
The release is from Finnish producer Dan Kaipio aka Type-303. Pete Isaac – head honcho at 45 Live – managed to pick up the last copy of Type-303’s last record. This followed a recommendation by DJ Food who has been amassing a large collection of Acid House 45s.
Pete got in touch with Dan and asked him whether he would like to do a 45 for the label and the rest as they say is history.
Side A ‘Sticky Disko’ is a straight up ska acid bouncy floor filler. It will bring back fond memories from the the early UK rave scene for those of a certain age.
Side B ‘ Analog Acidbath’ does exactly what it says on the tin. A funky heavy layered 303 workout for the dancefloor.
We were lucky enough to pick up one of the super limited edition psychedelic and transparent version before they sold out. There are a few copies of the black vinyl available but don’t hang around. Both releases come housed in a lovely full colour sleeve.
